N. Pendleton made this holiday ad for Cover Stories:

If you haven’t purchased a copy of the anthology with 100 stories, 10 writers and 1 new genre – which “hints at the future of the short story” - then order one today and get it in time for Christmas. Speaking of, the book makes a great holiday gift too.

And while we’re on the subject of N. Pendleton’s art, did you see him covering The Saga of Swamp Thing #6? How awesome is that?

Cover Stories “hints at the future of the short story.”

Playwright, author, actor and teacher Joey Madia over at New Mystics Reviews was kind enough to read and review Cover Stories:

This excellent collection¬—“100 stories, 10 authors, 1 new genre” (plus an intro by Mike Dawson and an Afterword by Sean P. Murray¬) hints at the future of the short story. Longer, but just as visually rich, as flash fiction, these euphicational stories seek to reproduce the compressed narrative structure of the songs on which they were based.

Naturally, he’s got a lot more to say about the anthology, which you can read here, including what his favorite stories are.

If you haven’t purchased your copy of Cover Stories, now is as good as any time to check it out.

ERLC Review: “Beautiful, evocative work by a serious writer and fellow traveller.”

Here is a wonderful review of Empty Rooms Lonely Countries from Good Reads:

It says a lot about the sad state of the modern cult-of-personality publishing industry we’re faced with today when books like ERLC aren’t being fought over by editors. This book is full of true events told through fiction, it’s a novel told in short stories. The protagonist Christian engages in a dreamlike but nonetheless relentless search for love — something in the context of this book that is both all-pervasive and frustratingly elusive. The language is simple, the stories go down like cool water, but the implications and ideas linger like both fine and bargain wines. And this is appropriate, because alcohol soaks this book clear through, leaving you at the end like you’ve awoken from a deep night of heavy drinking… What country am I in today? Did I really say those things? Where are my pants? Did she really kiss me?…

Beautiful, evocative work by a serious writer and fellow traveller.

How many copies of ERLC have been sold anyway?

27Some have asked how sales of EMPTY ROOMS LONELY COUNTRIES have been. Considering that there is a contest to win $1000 based on my selling 1000 copies of the book by the end of the year, I think it’s a fair question. As of today, I’ve sold 27 copies of the book through Amazon. This means I need to sell 973 more copies of the book to meet my goal.

I won’t pretend that this will be easy. Nor will I pretend that I don’t need your help. If you’ve purchased the book and you enjoyed it, please consider letting other people know. If you have a blog or a website, I’d be thrilled if you took the time to let people know about the book. Or maybe write a review of ERLC on Amazon. If you work in a bookstore, especially an independent one, and you are interested in carrying my book, contact me on how to get some copies. If you think you can help me in any way or have some suggestions , drop me an email.

Thanks.

“Geneva Street” Podcast

Geneva Street art by Nick Pendleton

“Geneva Street” art by Nick Pendleton

Last month, writer-artist extraordinaire Nick Pendleton of Museion made a podcast of my short story “Geneva Street” which is available right here. I’m always a little apprehensive when someone else adapts my work (especially since my collection of haikus was turned into a disastrous interpretive dance cabaret back in 2004), but Nick is someone who really seems to understand how these things work. The final result is something that surprised me, and upon my first listen, really spooked me.

If you want to read along, you can download a free PDF of “Geneva Street” here. But keep in mind that Nick used an older draft of the story with a different ending. It’s interesting to note the changes the happened along the way. Let me know which version you think works better.

Also, please be sure you explore Museion while you’re over there. Nick is someone who really deserves your support, whether it’s by purchasing some of his amazing products or listening to his numerous MusionCasts. Show him some love.

Hello!

Hello, and welcome to the official website for my new book EMPTY ROOMS LONELY COUNTRIES.

EMPTY ROOMS LONELY COUNTRIES collects a decade’s worth of short stories, wandering through two continents, five countries and multiple universes to explore love, loss and redemption in the 21st century. This collection brings together for the first time many of my previously published stories, including “Mad Dogs” and “Counting Nuns” from GUD Magazine, as well as some never before seen pieces.  There are twenty-seven stories in all, with maybe a surprise or two.

Click here for more information about the book, and if you want to read some free stories from the book, go here.

Plus, you’ll find information on how you can win $1000 by simply buying a copy of EMPTY ROOMS LONELY COUNTRIES. No joke.

I’ll be doing my best to update this site regularly with the latest information about all things having to do with the book. And there will probably be other nonsense as well.

Thanks for stopping by.

BOOKS

“I absolutely loved this book. EMPTY ROOMS LONELY COUNTRIES is bittersweet and touching, with some really funny bits . . . There are moments of sagacity and wisdom like I’ve rarely seen before, but it’s oh so sad – heartbreakingly, hauntingly, beautifully so . . . easily one of the my top ten favorite books of all time.” - TAMPA BOOK BUZZ
