This one may feel like it’s a stretch, especially considering that a lot of people probably don’t look at Vladimir Nabokov’s short story “Signs and Symbols” as a horror story. I disagree. The story of the parents of a deranged son and what happens when they go to visit him at the mental hospital on his birthday is tragic and overflowing with symbolism. Nabokov’s prose is so calculated and polished, the story just shines off the page. It is a literary story, and because of this, I’d gather that many critics and scholars would be hesitant to diminish the story with a label like “horror”.
