Wednesday Update:

by on June 3, 2009 at 2:42 pm

I sold 14 copies of Empty Rooms Lonely Countries over the weekend. For those keeping count at home, this puts the amount of sold copies to 53. Not a huge number by any means (especially when shooting for 1000 sold copies by the end of this year), but considering my schedule and my geographical disadvantage, I’m happy with the results so far. I’d like to be over a hundred by the end of July…we’ll see.

graphI’ve created a pie chart to make this look professional.

I’ve learned a lot in the past few months and I already have a good understanding on how to approach marketing when I publish the next book. This is hard work, make no mistake about it, but it’s also fun and challenging in a fun sort of way.

I have some interviews coming up that I’m excited about and I’ll post links when they become available. And I’m waiting patiently for the reviews to come in.

For those who have bought copies of the book, I encourage you to share your thoughts on the book either here or at Amazon. And if you haven’t sent a picture yet, please feel free to do so.

For those who are interested in reviewing a copy of the book, drop me an email and I’ll send you a review copy. I’m also available for interviews, podcasts, etc.

For those who have ideas on how to move more books, I’m ALWAYS open to suggestions.

Thanks.

Friday Update:

At Starbucks getting next week’s lecture on emergence and memes finished, as this weekend is completely booked with gardening, Bar-B-Ques and dinner guests.

Contest pictures are slowly coming in. I think I’m going to wait until I get a good amount of pictures before I start posting them. I’d like to be able to post a few a week until we reach the deadline at the end of the year. We’ll see how that goes.

I’ve sold half of the books I received from Amazon last week. If you live in Wroclaw and are interested in getting a book sooner rather than later, I’d recommend reserving a copy now. Send me an email or catch me around town.

I have more interviews in the pipeline, as well as more commentaries and new fiction.

Things appear to be picking up.

Have a great weekend.

James Gillham’s “Torn from the Journal of Abel Merriwether”:

James Gillham over at Where the Long Tail Ends put every writer at the site – myself included – to shame with his “Torn from the Journal of Abel Merriwether”, a piece that evokes the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, Mary Shelley, Neal Stephenson, Thomas Pynchon and probably a few other writers I missed. It’s weird and beautiful, and absolutely hysterical:

Julian and I both agreed to the terms, Julian graciously agreeing to go first so that I might have a moment longer to decide my subject. With a few words of encouragement from Guy, the four of us gathered at the foot of the dining table to begin the contest.

Julian mounted a dining chair and began waving his arms back and forth and stabbing his finger into the air. All of this was punctuated with an occasional violent thrusting forward of his pelvis. It took Countess Dawn L. a full seven minutes to discover that Julian was pantomiming his father’s tailor Christopher. He was quite chuffed that she hadn’t discovered it sooner, as it is a well-known fact that Christopher is a retired junior high school band instructor and child rapist.

It is in your best interest to check it out. It practically justifies the internet’s existence.

Fantastic work, James.

Naturally, I hate you.

Sample of “On Being Velma-less” from EMPTY ROOMS LONELY COUNTRIES

Every other Wednesday, I will post a small sample from each short story from Empty Rooms Lonely Countries. If you want more information and don’t mind spoilers, you can click the commentary link below to learn more about the story itself. This week’s story is from “On Being Velma-less”. I hope you enjoy it.

sampler

At the bar, I strike a chord with a woman I had met before. I almost didn’t recognize her at all. The last time I saw her she was dressed as Velma from Scooby Doo with such a precision for detail, that it was literally breathtaking. She had the glasses, the short cut hair, the orange turtleneck shirt with the short skirt, the stockings and that lesbian disposition that made Velma so blasted intriguing to begin with. The problem, however, was that this costume made her so erotically charged that she sparked impure thoughts in me for weeks.

And all these years, I thought Daphne was the one for me.

We have a good conversation with no awkward silences or advances to look at her watch. There’s a lot of eye contact that enriches the textures of our discourse and I am feeling that surge I always get when I am enjoying the moment with someone new.

I start planning our first date in my head. First we would have dinner, then I figure we could cruise around, eventually meet some old man named Mr. Farley, stumble on some type of petty crime, get chased around by some monster that is obviously a man in a silly rubber suit, somehow turn the tables and catch the monster, unmask him to discover, much to our surprise, that the monster is actually Mr. Farley. Mr. Farley would confess his crime and then say that he would have gotten away with it too, had it not been for us rascally kids. Then maybe we’d catch a movie or something.

“I absolutely loved this book. EMPTY ROOMS LONELY COUNTRIES is bittersweet and touching, with some really funny bits . . . There are moments of sagacity and wisdom like I’ve rarely seen before, but it’s oh so sad – heartbreakingly, hauntingly, beautifully so . . . easily one of the my top ten favorite books of all time.” - TAMPA BOOK BUZZ
