I’m gonna break my rusty cage and run…

We’ve been making an effort to do something special with our new home by adding things you don’t find anywhere else (rather than templates from IKEA – which I’m not bashing, we did that for many years and loved it). Of course, trying to do something different has a lot of challenges, the biggest one being is that it takes a lot longer to find what we’re looking for, especially for people like us who only-know-it-when-we-see-it.

Justyna had found half a decorative bird cage for cheap at a store and as soon as I saw it I knew what we could do. Over one of the heaters in our dining room, we have this large amount of empty space that I’ve been wanting to do something with for a while now, and this old cage was perfect…

The paint I used for the background is called Nebraska. I was going for a sky blue and this was the next best thing.

All I needed to finish it was find the right plant. The container holding the plant serendipitously ended up being the same color as the paint. Over time, as the plant grows more, I expect the container to disappear into the foliage. For now, I love how the plant sort of comes from nowhere.

I’m really, really proud of how this turned out. There’s a nice 3-D effect when you’re looking at it head on, and it really lights up in the middle of the day as it sits next to one of the windows to the backyard.
