The goal of this course is to look at American Pop Culture through the use of narratives, exploring how the American experience is communicated through different media, including books, graphic novels, television, movies, periodicals and websites. We will cover material from the 1850s to the present as we navigate through Naturalism, Realism, Modernism and Postmodernism and beyond. My hope is to not only make this journey entertaining, but to allow students to better understand the evolution of one of the most influential countries in history by examining its storytelling.
The goal of this course is to look at modern American Pop Culture by examining its use of humor and satire. We’ll be looking at humor and satire in terms of its historical context and how it helped to shape and define America’s freedom of speech.
The goal of this course is to look at modern American storytelling as it’s presented through television. We will look at the traditions of American stories in the past and how these traditions are carried on today through a wide selection of specific television shows. Students will learn to recognize patterns and motifs in selected shows that not only enable the series’ success, but help to move the entire medium forward in terms of relevancy and storytelling.
