Happy Anniversary, West Coast Wednesdays!

Panel of the Year!

Hard to believe it’s been a year since I started this ridiculous exercise in self loathing that I call West Coast Wednesdays. That’s right, true believers, one year ago I started commenting on this book from the very beginning (West Coast Avengers Vol. 1, #1) when it started out as a lowly four issue mini-series.

It was a year ago this week when I wrote these fateful words:

I have decided to spend the next one hundred plus Wednesdays talking about The West Coast Avengers. This Marvel comic book was published from 1985 to 1994 and was the first series I picked up from the very beginning. While my brother was a big X-Men fan, the West Coast Avengers was my team. There was something really special about being there to watch the team form and grow from the very beginning, rather than wade through the twenty-plus years of continuity that the X-Men had at the time.

And so, taking a cue from the amazing work of Siskoid’s Blog of Geekery, particularly the Spaceknight Saturdays where he chronologically discussed an issue of Rom every Saturday for what seemed like a decade, I have decided to take on this endeavor.

As I write this, I can already sense that this might be the stupidest thing I’ve ever done. But no matter! I’m committed to re-reading my West Coast Avengers collection from the beginning (some issues I haven’t read in 25 years) and reliving the excitement and pure awesome that Hawkeye and the gang brought me month in and month out.

Please join me next Wednesday right here as I begin my slow descent ascent into madness awesome with West Coast Wednesdays!

Little did I know that WCW would blow up to become the least read feature on my website. I can’t properly stress how unpopular this feature is week in and week out. Thanks to all six of you who read WCW as I relive the glory days when the Avengers turned into another East Coast – West Coast thing. My prediction was correct, this is the stupidest thing I’ve ever done. The rewards for this exercise have been so ephemeral, I’ve been forced to regularly question my own sanity.

So far, I’ve covered the original four issue West Coast Avengers mini-series, the first 39 issues of the monthly West Coast Avengers book, two Avengers annuals, three West Coast Avengers annuals, as well as peripheral issues of Iron Man, Avengers, Vision and Scarlet Witch, and Silver Surfer as they related to specific WCA stories. Here are all of the issues I’ve written about so far (in chronological order):

Thanks! And see you next week! I think…

Pym, like, totally gets me, man!

  1. Really? It’s one thing that I read every week when it pops up in my Google Reader. I love it, likely because I loved the West Coast Avengers too. I’d likely still be reading it if it were around.

  2. Wha–?! You should have said something!

Just discovered West Coast Wednesdays and I’ll just have to go back and read them all! I was a big fan of the WCA too, flaws and all, and a lot of its members remain among my favorite Avengers to this day – Hawkeye & Mockingbird, Tigra, Iron Man and Hank Pym in particular. (Sorry Wonder Man!)

  3. Great to have you here! Like I said at the beginning, your ROM feature was my inspiration for doing this, and I probably would’ve started with ROM had I come up with the idea on my own.

Thank you. Hope you enjoy what you read.
